What Are the Olympus Scope Infection Lawsuits About?

Olympus has been named in many lawsuits that say some endoscope devices helped spread serious infections between patients during procedures with the same Olympus scope.

Olympus scopes are flexible tubes equipped with small cameras. Doctors insert them through the mouth or into the colon to look at the digestive tract.

Olympus reusable scopes are reportedly used in about 70% of ERCP, colonoscopy, upper endoscopy, and bronchoscopy procedures.

How Do Olympus Scopes Spread Infection?

Olympus reusable scopes have narrow internal channels, elevator parts, hinges, and sealed parts — small spaces where blood, tissue, and bacteria can stay trapped even after the device is cleaned.

If bacteria or other infectious material stay inside the device, the unclean device can spread the infection from one patient to another during a later procedure. That can cause an endoscope infection.

The FDA started warning about this in 2015. In 2018, Olympus pled guilty to failing to report infections tied to its scopes and paid more than $80 million in criminal penalties. Since then, the FDA has also sent more warning letters about manufacturing problems and, in 2025, blocked the import of many models of Olympus devices. In some cases, patients say the infection that changed their health — sepsis, a drug-resistant “superbug,” organ damage, or worse — came from a scope the company knew it could not guarantee was clean.
